The riza uses a scrolled floral pattern to accent the subjects and covers the less important areas of the icon. The image of Christ Pantocrator Ruler of all depicts Him as Creator Judge and Redeemer enthroned and holding the Gospels and blessing with His right hand. These two actions represent His word as our judge and His love which sustains us. The text shown can be one of a number of passages. The image of the Pantocrator is often seen in Byzantine icons frescoes or mosaics from the cupolas of churches. The Greek word Pantocrator means Ruler of All.
